Tuesday Nights at the Calypso

A Decade of Inspired Entertainment by Jack Tempchin & the Rocket Science Band

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, acclaimed songwriter Jack Tempchin, writer of many of the Eagles’ greatest hits, including “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Already Gone,” made the Calypso Cafe in Leucadia, California, his unofficial home base. Backed by a talented group of musicians called Rocket Science, he performed every Tuesday night for over a decade. This excellent bit of fun, coupled with the funky ambiance and delicious French-Caribbean cuisine of the restaurant, made Tuesday nights at the Calypso an irresistible destination for locals and tourists alike. During much of their tenancy, the illustrator, Tracy Sabin, endeavored to capture through pen and ink drawings, the look and feel of their performances.

Like Mark Tobey’s sketches of the market, [Tuesday Nights at the Calypso] memorializes a wonderfrul era of music, friendship and excellent dining. The drawings–taken from life–relay that ambiance and authenticity. The statements are mementos to appreciate and treasure. Café society we wish all our nation could enjoy and celebrate. It takes generosity, good will, good humor, dedication and faithfulness. It encourages relaxation. Appreciation. Enlarged sense of the family of man.
