Poems I wrote in the 1980s provided the source for many of the lyrics. I hammered out the musical compositions on a Rhodes piano in the early 1990s. “The Attendant” celebrates the boost a stranger’s simple gesture can provide to one who is struggling. “There Was a Tall Man” draws from a collection of limericks I wrote for a poetry class at the University of Oregon. I revised “The Pretty One” to reflect my changing perception of a friend’s belief choices. “Nobbin, Bobbin, and Cobb” draws from my picture book. “Before the Close” gives voice to the ambition of overcoming personal limitations. “Contentment on the Half-shell” wonders about the utility of trying to figure out the meaning of life. My mother’s premature death in 1982 motivated the creation of “Farewell at the Shore.” I wrote the nonsense poem, “The Gnat-eyed Nimby” at the age of 17. The traditional sea shanty “Leave Her Johnny” and the classic nursery rhyme “If All the Seas Were One Sea,” feature original tunes composed on a Casio electronic piano in the 1980s.
